Performance problems

  • Big brush at fine detail. A 3 cm stroke at Studio takes about 60 ms a frame. Block out at Ultra or below, and save Studio for small parts.
  • Too fine overall. Lower the detail level for big, simple objects; keep the fine level only where the detail is.
  • Hidden work. Hide objects you aren’t sculpting.
  • Detail mesh too dense. Step down a level for broad changes.

Shapeaway warns when a sculpt reaches its memory limit and asks whether to raise it. If your computer itself is short:

  • Close other heavy apps.
  • Lower the detail level of objects that don’t need it.
  • Remove detail-mesh levels you no longer need.
  • Undo history counts towards memory; saving, closing and reopening starts it fresh.

Big sculpts are saved in parts on every core; a painted Studio sculpt of several hundred megabytes takes a few seconds. Save to a local drive rather than a network or synced folder.
