Photo matching

Photos taken from any angle can guide a sculpt, once Shapeaway knows where each one was taken from. Photo matching works that out from a few points you mark.

  1. Refs › Photos: add your photos. Any number, each gets its own camera.
  2. Choose a photo and Match the camera.
  3. Mark points on the photo: the corners of the eyes, the tip of the nose, the corners of the mouth, the chin, the ears. The view holds still at the photo’s camera while you mark.
  4. Mark the same points on the sculpt, in the same order. Orbit freely to reach them; numbered pins show which is which.
  5. Solve. Shapeaway finds the camera’s position, angle, lens and distortion from six or more points, and shows how far off each point is.

Look through puts the view exactly at a matched photo’s camera, with the photo over the sculpt (straightened for its lens), at any opacity or as an outline of its edges. Sculpt until the silhouette and features line up, then orbit away: any orbit, pan, zoom or standard view leaves the photo.

  • Use points you can find exactly on both photo and sculpt. The more spread out they are, the better the solve.
  • Points only side photos can see (the bridge of the nose, the tip of the nose) are best placed on the centre line.
  • The overlay never appears in exports.

Next: project colour from the photos.
